Introduction to the UBC Red Cross
Welcome to the INTRODUCTION TO UBC RED CROSS page. Here's where you can learn more about our past events and see which ones you'd like to attend.
30 Hour Fast
Every year we hold a 30 hour fast to bring awareness to world hunger. All the money we raise from the event will go towards our appeal for the current year. The majority of the fast is done on the participants’ own time. At the end of the fast, we will have a party with plenty of good food, speakers and fun activities. This is a great chance for those who are interested in learning more about world hunger issues and our current appeal.
Christmas Caroling at Vancouver General Hospital
Few days after the end of December exams, some of us get together and practice some Christmas carols for this event. We usually go during the evening in groups of 5-7 people. Once we all arrive at VGH, a hospital volunteer will take us around the facility where we do our magic. We encourage participants to dress up or bring accessories such as small bells. This is a rewarding experience for both the hospital patients and the volunteers
Polar Bear Dip
Polar bear dip was an incredibly fun event that started three years ago to raise money for our appeal of the year. We had sign ups throughout January, and the event was usually held in early February. All the participants gathered at Wreck Beach and jumped into water in their swimsuits (or attire of your choice). We also provided hot food such as yummy pizzas, fresh pastries, and warm beverages to keep them energized. We always had professional lifeguards and first aid personnel in case of emergencies. This was a wonderful chance to just be adventurous, meet many interesting people, and raise money for a good cause. Due to complications, it did not run last year but perhaps our new members have ideas to overcome these complications and bring back this fantastic event!
Krispy Kreme Sales
A few times a year, we sell these delicious treats usually in front of the Sub to fundraise for our cause. During cooler weather, we also offer free hot chocolate.
AIDS Week
AIDS week is a week long series of events and activities all culminating to the International AIDS Day. This week is a cross-campus, cross-clubs project that brings together diverse approaches to the problem of AIDS. Throughout this week, a variety of seminars, lectures, plays, and gallery nights are hosted around campus all giving us a wonderful range of perspectives on this popular issue. Last year the UBC Red Cross was involved in the Condom Project- an art project aimed at normalizing condom use and fostering dialogue on overcoming AIDS and condom taboos. Many of the core organizers graduated last year so this year there may be many leadership opportunities.
Trick or Eat
You may think that you’re too old for trick or treating but no one is too old for Trick or Eat. Every Halloween we gather round our members and their friends to collect food donations for the AMS and Lower Mainland Food Banks, instead of collecting candy-although most people give you candy anyway for being part of such a great cause! Meal Exchange has taken on the organizing role but the UBC Red Cross participates as its own team and also volunteers with the event. Last year there were 400 participants at UBC who collected the second largest amount from any Canadian university, filled the AMS food bank for the year and donated colossal amounts of food for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.
Awareness Seminars/ Documentary Sessions
Speakers from the field, documentaries from people who’ve been there and interaction with people who care about the same thing you do: it’s all part of becoming a conscious, intelligent global citizen. Every year we bring a variety of such seminars from various places to you, sometimes also collaborating with other clubs to touch on a variety of issues. As a member you can help organize, bring a speaker or simply come and enjoy the full benefit of our sessions.
First Aid
The UBC International Red Cross offers basic First Aid CPR-C courses once or twice per term. This handy course is not only very practical to have but is useful when job searching as most jobs require someone with First-AID training. This First-AID CPR-C certification is taught by experienced instructors and lasts for three years. We offer this course to everyone for a low price, but our members receive a discount because we love our members!
Social Events
Every year we wanted to bring out club members together and have a little fun through creative social events. They can be simply a night out for skating and hot chocolate, group dinners, or all out concerts. What we do depends on what our members want to do…so you tell us!!! We keep our costs down as much as possible as our goal is to send the most amount of money to our appeal.
